The study of gastroenterology focuses on the organs of the body that are associated in any way with the digestion and processing of food in the body. This includes all the organs starting from the mouth and ending with the anus. Within the “digestive tract” as it is known are organs such as the stomach, small and large intestine, and esophagus, just to name a few. Since this is a very complex and sensitive organ system, it can be affected by many different conditions and diseases.

A gastroenterologist can properly diagnose these issues and if discovered in time may be able to solve the issue or prevent it from getting worse. However, as a patient it is important to know some basic of some of the most common conditions affecting this organ system. This will allow one to better communicate their conditions with his or her doctor. A well-informed patient can be easily and more quickly diagnosed.
